Ragnar Kjartansson: music, duration and collectible video installations

From The Visitors to Woman in E: how musical and durational actions become video installations, editions and works with precise protocols.

Who is Ragnar Kjartansson: repeat until feeling changes

Born in Reykjavík in 1976, Ragnar Kjartansson works across performance, music, video, painting and theatre. A song, romantic pose or phrase repeats until irony and melancholy become inseparable. The Met describes his work as rethinking the possibilities of performance and video.

Duration is the material that changes performers and viewers: repetition produces fatigue, error, intimacy and tiny differences. Recording gives time a physical place within the work.

The Visitors: a performance becomes an environment

The Visitors, 2012, records musicians in separate rooms of Rokeby Farm during one performance. Nine synchronized channels reassemble the group in the gallery, and visitors build their own path through the sound.

SFMOMA and MoMA jointly own the work. The acquisition is not a loose video file but an installation with nine images, synchronized audio and defined presentation conditions.

A Lot of Sorrow, Woman in E and the live work

A Lot of Sorrow shows The National repeating one song for more than six hours. Woman in E gives a musician one chord on a gold stage. Duration and the museum frame transform familiar musical forms.

A live performance may be commissioned or reactivated through contract and score, while a derived video can be an autonomous edition. Separate event fee, restaging right, ownership of the recording and purchase of the audiovisual installation.

How a multichannel video installation is sold

The work sheet should specify channels, duration, file formats, resolution, synchronization, audio, projection size, aspect ratio, darkness, furniture and installation diagram. The certificate identifies edition and artist’s proof; masters require preservation copies.

Projectors and computers age. The agreement should state which devices may be replaced, who approves migration and how colour, sound and synchronization are maintained. A work can be culturally damaged even while its files still play.

An entry point beyond the major installation

Kjartansson’s market also includes drawings, paintings, prints and photographic works. These are distinct entries into the practice, not reduced versions of The Visitors. Autonomy, series, edition, signature, provenance and exhibition history matter.

Before buying a photograph or multiple linked to a famous work, ask whether it was conceived as artwork, published by the artist or produced as editorial material. Image quality does not replace category clarity.
