Two economies of the original
A painting is usually unique; a photograph may exist in a declared edition. Neither model is inherently superior. Scarcity must be understood within the artist’s chosen medium.
Materials and conservation
Ask about support, pigments, paper, printing process, mounting, framing and exposure to light or humidity. Different objects require different care.
Choose the research
The useful comparison is not painting versus photography in the abstract, but one coherent body of work versus another. Choose the question and image you want to continue living with.
