Louise Bourgeois: “Art is a guaranty of sanity”
A sentence became an artwork: creation did not erase torment for Bourgeois, but gave it form, rhythm and distance.
A sentence becomes an artwork
“Art is a guaranty of sanity.” Bourgeois used the words in several works; in 2000 they also became a pencil drawing now held by MoMA. The unsteady handwriting matters: this is a repeated necessity rather than a polished maxim.
The phrase does not promise a clinical cure. It proposes artistic practice as a structure through which memory, fear, anger and desire can be faced.
Creation is not a diagnosis
Bourgeois worked for decades on family, body, abandonment and repair. Her words lose their force if reduced to the romantic myth of the “mad artist”: suffering does not certify quality, and an artwork cannot prove a diagnosis.
Art becomes a form of symbolic survival. It does not erase conflict; it makes conflict visible and shareable.
