Liste Art Fair Basel 2026: where young galleries are discovered
Basel’s fair for young galleries and focused presentations by emerging artists.
Why this fair matters
Founded in 1996, Liste has become the experimental counterpoint to Art Basel week. From 15 to 21 June 2026 it presents a new generation of galleries and artists, often through solo exhibitions or tightly focused dialogues.
History and identity
Liste was founded in 1996 as the “Young Art Fair in Basel”. Its first edition brought together 36 galleries from 12 countries, giving international access to a generation with limited entry to established structures. Galleries later central to the market, including Massimo De Carlo, Perrotin and David Zwirner, appeared at Liste, as did artists who are now widely recognised. Since 2022 the fair has belonged to a non-profit foundation supporting contemporary art.
Major fair or independent ecosystem?
Its connection to Art Basel is structural yet independent. Liste runs during Basel Art Week and was created because young galleries had little access to the larger fair. Art Basel remains the blue-chip market centre; Liste acts as laboratory and entry point. Proximity brings collectors and visibility, but does not automatically turn every participant into a prospect: follow what happens to both gallery and artist after Basel.
Artists to look for
Beatričė Mockevičiūtė and Gerda Paliušytė work across light, space and photography; Gozié Ojini turns instruments and mechanical fragments into sculpture. Liste’s strength is the chance to read a project beyond the single saleable object.
How to compare
Ask how long the gallery has worked with the artist, which institutions have shown the work and which prices truly belong to the same series. Compare fair works with the artist’s site and gallery archive.
