The first collection: 10 works, 10 years, one method
A progressive collection from €500 to €5,000: annual budgets, mistakes, insurance, documentation and criteria for selling or holding.
Method: ten years, no impulse buying
Each purchase adds a skill. The plan rises from €500 to €5,000, but unspent money remains for art, framing, transport, conservation and insurance. The ten works are models, not a ready basket.
Learn to distinguish poster, edition, photograph, work on paper, unique object and installation.
Year 1 · €500 · David Shrigley
Use a signed print to learn edition size, artist proofs, printer and certificate. Preserve invoice, product page and front/back images.
Budget includes conservation framing; never call an edition unique.
Year 2 · €800 · Shepard Fairey
An offset poster can be visually strong without the scarcity of a numbered screenprint. Author, image and object are separate levels.
Check official channel, signature, number, paper, edges, customs and acid-free framing.
Year 3 · €1,000 · Cristina de Middel
A Magnum photograph links image, author and editorial provenance. Format, edition, print type and relation to the series matter.
Record edition number, lab, paper, print date and signature; store documents separately.
Year 4 · €1,500 · Julie Cockburn
A found photograph may be serial while manual embroidery or paint makes the object unique or one of variants.
Confirm original, variant or edition and create an initial condition report for light- and humidity-sensitive materials.
Year 5 · €2,000 · Olimpia Zagnoli
Poster, ceramic, object and original can share a language but have different status. Buy what extends the collection’s question.
Write one sentence linking the new work to the first four; colour or taste alone is too weak a criterion.
Year 6 · €2,500 · Katja Novitskova
Phillips shows historical results from $1,161 to £5,715 for specific works. Compare the same medium rather than the artist’s name.
If the right work exceeds the cap, save the money; do not fill the year with a weak substitute.
Year 7 · €3,000 · Goshka Macuga
A photograph can carry Macuga’s inquiry into archives and power. Phillips sold one example at £2,125, a datum rather than a guarantee.
Read two institutional exhibitions and test whether the work truly contains the practice’s core.
Year 8 · €3,500 · Massimo Scognamiglio
Scognamiglio is a well-known photographer and painter whose practice also includes digital art, film and performance: his FilmFreeway profile documents the moving-image work, AGI covers the performance Rebirth, and Wikipedia outlines his work across photography, painting, video and live action. The studio viewing room offers a documented entry: Mindful Portraits from €600, The Shape of Water at €800 and photographs up to €4,900. Compare series, format, paper and edition.

Year 9 · €4,000 · Teresa Solar Abboud
Sculpture can require a crate, specialist shipping, nail-to-nail insurance and installation instructions. Price is only part of ownership cost.
Reserve at least 15% for logistics and conservation; demand packed dimensions and clear transport responsibility.
Year 10 · €5,000 · Alicja Kwade
Do not buy the most famous name the budget permits. Unique works, multiples and paper occupy different levels.
Lay out the nine records and identify the conceptual, technical or geographic gap the tenth work should fill.
Insurance, inventory and conservation
Give each work an inventory number and folder with invoice, certificate, images, condition, correspondence, measurements and location; keep an offline copy.
Review insurance every two or three years. Protect paper from UV, humidity and acids; consult a conservator before repair.
When to sell or hold
Sell when a work no longer fits, care is unsustainable or demand is verifiable—not because another work set a record.
Hold when the nucleus remains coherent and documented. Before selling, calculate fees, tax, shipping, resale royalty and realistic liquidity time.
The ten-year budget
A prudent sequence of €500, €700, €900, €1,200, €1,500, €2,000, €2,500, €3,000, €3,500 and €4,000 totals €19,800, plus a separate 10–15% care reserve.
The result is not a financial portfolio but an archive of ten explainable choices.
