Contemporary art photography under €1,500: how to choose a print
Edition, process, signature, provenance and care, with Cristina de Middel, Gregory Halpern, Nanna Heitmann and Yael Martínez as international examples.
What are you buying?
A €1,500 ceiling opens access to editioned prints, small formats and some book-and-print editions. The budget sets a field for comparison; it does not assign quality.
A collectable photograph is a physical object defined by process, paper, size, mounting, edition, signature or stamp, provenance and condition. The photographers here are examples, not an investment ranking.
Edition, signature and stamp
The cited Magnum Editions specify an 8 × 10 inch archival pigment print, an edition of 100, numbering and a Magnum archive stamp. Each detail answers a different question.
A signature does not automatically create scarcity, and a certificate cannot repair an incomplete description.
The total budget
The four cited prints were listed at $400 unframed when researched. Exchange rate, shipping, tax, duty and conservation framing determine whether the delivered total remains below €1,500.
Leave a margin and request the final cost in writing.
Four different ways to use photography
Cristina de Middel places document and fiction in tension through The Afronauts. Gregory Halpern holds beauty and social contradiction in the same frame. Nanna Heitmann joins long-form environmental reporting with close human observation. Yael Martínez uses symbol and absence to address violence and memory.
The shared format and price make the comparison useful: subject, ethics, sequence and visual language become more visible when commercial variables are similar.

For a €1,500 ceiling, ask the studio for currently available photographs or editions and a delivered quotation. No undocumented price is assigned here.
Paper, scale and care
Ask for paper, process, sheet and image dimensions, margins and mounting. Make a paper template on the wall before ordering.
The Library of Congress recommends cool, relatively dry and stable conditions, limited light, photo-safe materials and separation between the print surface and glazing.
Checklist
Request artist, title, capture and print dates, process, paper, dimensions, edition, number, artist proofs, signature or stamp, certificate, condition, provenance, delivered price and shipping time.
Then ask whether you would still want to live with the image if its price never increased.
